SERENITY NOW

For those in search of a desert escape, hotel visionary Adrian Zecha opens the Amanresorts’ second U.S. property, Amangiri

by Janet O’Grady
THE LOWDOWN: Located near the Utah-Arizona border, Amangiri is set on a 600-acre expanse of wilderness that was home to Navajo and Hopi tribes for centuries. Small may be beautiful, but not in canyon country, where it’s all about big views: Gaze out on stunning 200-million-year-old mesas and rock formations. Expect the Aman’s singular combination of subdued luxury and sense of place with stellar service.
Which room? There are 34 suites, but for something special book the Girijaala or Amangiri Suites, with private pools and secluded outdoor sky terraces.
WHAT TO DO: The resort is a luxe base for excursions to Lake Powell, Grand Canyon National Park, Monument Valley, and Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks. After hiking or biking, relax at its 25,000-square-foot spa.
Rates: Start at $600.
